Another band to check out is Prototype. They mix speed metal with progressive metal. Check em out.

I've heard of them. Back when mp3.com was up and running I downloaded a cover they did of Testament's Into the Pit. Never heard anything else by them but they did a great job on the cover song.

Yeah, I would say Necrophagist is one of the bands to check out if you want technical music.  I recommend their album "Onset of Putrefaction" over their newest, "Epitaph".

I'd have to say my favorite technical band right now is Capharnaum.  They only have one album so far, but it is fantastic.  Vocals are done by Matt Heafy of Trivium.  I don't like Trivium at all, but his vocals for Capharnaum are quite well done.  They help give the music a different vibe, and set it apart from a lot of other technical death metal bands.

I was thinking of writing more about this album, but it's one of my favorites so I'll probably just save it until I write a review!   Highly recommended.

Another progressive band to check out is Orphaned Land.  I have their album "Mabool".  It's not exactly my style, but objectively it's very very good and very creative.  Recommended for those who like the more prog side of things.  It uses death vocals pretty sparingly, most of it is clean singing as you would expect from prog metal.

I think every one listed the big ones, so here's some that are a bit more underground:

Section 16 - Colorado band. Their singer is also in Redemption, Magnitude 9, and Balance of Power. Their guitar player and drummer play in a cover band that Harry Conklin (Jag Panzer) used to be in called Mother Load. Click here for their MySpace Page

Distant Warning - Colorado Band. Their drummer has played live with Shadow Keep, and their new album rocks. Check out their site here.

Ancient Cross - Texas band, their singer is now also in Reverend and he's the ShadowKeep webmaster. Click here for their website

Burning Shadows - Maryland band. I used to hang out with them when I lived there, met them at a Blind Guardian/Symphony X show. Check out their MySpace page here.

TimeLord - from Virginia. Their guitarist/singer used to be in Malintent and Forgotten Realm. Check them out here

Check these out, I dont doubt you'll be impressed.

Excellent! Thanks for the reccomendations. I like what I have heard from Ancient Cross so far. I am excited about a prog band from Baltimore since I grew up only 30 minutes from there (now I am about 50 minutes away).

Actually, every band listed sounds pretty good.

Tomorrow's Eve.  Been listening to their latest Mirror of Creation 2 - Genesis II for several days and it is very good.  Hopefully will have a review of it up soon.

Umm...To-Mera (the CD I'm going to review).  It's good, especially if you like female vocalists.
