Take a listen to the last few minutes of the song Blackwater Park. There is some amazing double bass. Not the fastest ever but damn good.

I've been a fan of Opeth for about 6 years.  They are definitely one of metal's most forward thinking bands.  Morningrise used to be my favorite for the fantastic, epic songs and classical guitar work.  At this point my favorites are "My Arms, Your Hearse" and "Ghost Reveries".  Blackwater Park is a good album, but I've never liked it as much as most people do.  It seems to be too mellow for my tastes.  I began to feel like Opeth's mellow sections were too monotonous, Mikael's voice didn't have much variation between the two extremes of growling or singing.  This is why I found Ghost Reveries to be a big improvement and a very pleasant surprise.  As opposed to before, when there seemed to be two modes that the band alternated between, now I find the metal and the mellow sections to be more inegrated.  I like how they sometimes use growling over mellow music, and with the new album they have added some upbeat and fast parts where the vocals are sung cleanly, but with more energy.  (I'm thinking of Harlequin Forest in particular).

I really wasn't expecting to like GR all that much, since Deliverance and Damnation are not the strongest albums IMO.  Deliverance did not have enough layers to it during the heavy parts, it seemed to be more like riffs strung together and less like the Opeth soundscapes that we're used to.  Damnation was too monotonous for me, it's not very dynamic.  I'm not someone who requires the growling and heavy parts, but there was no emotional variation in the singing.  It seems to focus too much on being pretty and not enough on being powerful/emotional.  In terms of Opeth's mellow stuff, I prefer A Fair Judgement, Isolation Years, Atonement, To Bid You Farewell, Credence, etc. to the songs on Damnation.

just my two cents.

One of my favorite bands of all time. Morningrise is a true classic along with Blackwater Park. They're a hit or miss band, for the simple reason of that they have long songs. I'll use Morningrise as an example. It is over an hour long and only 5 songs (unless you count the bonus re-release then it would be 6)so, if you dislike two of the songs, that is 40% right there.

Not a problem for me. I love Morningrise. The bass work on that album is amazing.

Night And The Silent Water has one of my favorite acoustic interludes toward the last 3 minutes of the song.

What you used to love now, you're gonna adore. With Charmin Ultra, less is more. Cha Cha Cha, Charmin.

Yes, the bass work is in my eyes their best on that album. It also features their best ballad "To Bid You Farewell" that is a beautiful song. Exspecially the last 3 or 4 minutes when the electric guitar kicks in.

Opeth has a very special place in my heart. But, I feel that they can either be breathtaking and enchanting, or repetitive and monotonous. Some songs that are 7+ minutes can get extremely annoying, especially if a lot of the songs sound the same or there aren't many dynamics in one song itself. But in my eyes, they even themselves out, because I absolutely adore a few of their songs on "Damnation" and "Morningrise."

Are you basing that more on "My Arms, Your Hearse" than Damnation? Blah, I bought you that by accident. Figured you wouldn't enjoy it. I see it like this though, if you like the music, the song could be an hour long and you wouldn't care. I could see you enjoying these Opeth albums, kristi.

Orchid

Morningrise

Still Life

Blackwater Park

and obviously Damnation
