| Seems like this band is a hit or miss with most folks. I don't know of many people who think they are "just OK". People either can't get enough of them (me), or can't stand them. It took me a loooooong time to understand this band and truely appreciate the music. The first song I heard, Black Rose Immortal, bored me to tears. It is nearly 20 minutes long, I think, and I caught the middle section where they slow things down and are somewhat acoustic. When I was expecting headache inducing music that really caught me off guard and I didn't like it. But the more I read about the band, specifically the album Blackwater Park, the more I thought I should give them another shot. I am glad I did. Blackwater Park is a masterpeice, a true monster in the world of metal. Over the years the band has really evovled a great deal. The first few albums were pretty raw. The vocals were rough, even for death-metal style. The instrumentation was less mature, I think, but never lacked power. As the band grew and progressed they got more polished and sophisticated. But the intensity remained. I would not call them death metal but because of Akerfeldt's vocal style and the imagery they get lumped in with Morbid Angel and the like. They are a very progressive band, very adventurous with the soundscapes they create. Truly an amazing band - for some. I think everybody should give them a listen at least twice. Start with Blackwater Park, the album, or maybe My Arms Your Hearse. Both of them are a pretty good representation of the band. If you want specific songs to start with, look no further than Bleak or Blackwater Park from Blackwater Park, and Demon of the Fall from My Arms Your Hearse.

It didn't really take me time to love these guys. They introduced me to true metal actually.
