| so last night i saw opeth and dark tranquility. dark tranquility was amazing and my neck still hurts but opeth. they were horrible. I mean the dude was a douche bag on stage, and i just didn't get it. There was no mosh, or headbanging for that matter. actually there was a bit of mosh. For those who heard Ghost of Perdition, you know there are some parts where it was hard, and then it gets soft. well people would mosh for like 30 seconds or whatever, and then stand zstill during the accoustic part. i found it was overly gay. i am sorry if i offended opeth fans. allthough i must give credit to the keyboardist, as he was pretty cool.

| I'm not sure Opeth's music really works for having extended mosh pits... It seems that the pace changes to frequently. Also, I think Opeth has reached a current status where the audience is really interested in "seeing" what is being done on stage. I know when I saw them last year (for the first time) I was very interested in "watching" and "enjoying" and not wanting to miss anything. But this is just my opinion... I don't have much patience for mosh pits anyway... I stand and bang my head and watch in reverence and awe of the power of metal... but this could also by my incredibly old age talking... lol

| I'm with You there Bare (not the old age but the watching ..lol) I enjoy the musical aspect of a band more so now than when I was younger. For me Seeing these new bands and engaging in any moshing is just not my thing . although back in the day I can Gladly say I was in almost every pit I could get into with bands like slayer, pantera, anthrax, testament, etc etc... Now a days I tend to watch the band and see how they perform . It's Been a long time since I've seen a band come thru that's put on a real good METAL show..Last I can Remember was MAIDEN .they were awesome. That's kinda funny ..having 30 seconds of moshing ..I really think OPETH is more a band to watch anyway ...

Yeah, no offense taken as an avid Opeth fan. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I am with Bare, also in that I am there to watch and listen not mosh and miss the music. And while some of Opeth's music does have it's mosh-y moments most of the time should be spent soaking it all up. Just an opinion, though.

| I'm not big into moshing either. The visual aspect is very important since you can always listen to the CD/live album or watch a DVD if there is one. I don't think moshing really indicates the crowd reaction at all. I think when people have their horns up and sing/shout along the lyrics is something that really shows how popular the band is with the crowd. When I saw In Flames a couple of years ago and As I Lay Dying opened, there were some mosh pits but they practically got booed off the stage (I'm not going to comment on whether or not I was doing that since some metalcore fans might read this and I don't want to offend anyone). They weren't too well recieved to say the least but there was still a pit. Maybe SteveSaks was at the show, it was at Roseland Ballroom like in June or July of 04. While both times I saw King Diamond play, the venues were packed like sardines and people between the ages of 16 to 50 all had their horns up and basically knew all of the lyrics. There was not even one pit, that I saw of anyway.

There was nothing intense going on at the Opeth concert that I was at either... but I was intently watching the band. It was a pretty calm evening...

Same here. And I can see Efil's point of view as well. There are many, many people that go to concerts expecting certain things to happen with certain types of bands. And if the expected doesn't happen sometimes that can be disappointing.
As for another contrasting viewpoint, at Overkill last month there was too much moshing and it made the show less enjoyable than it could have been, for me. So, as I said before, different strokes.....
