Well, since that video thread started turing into a gear discussion, I figured I'd start a new thread for other bassists to geek out in with me. Steve keeps threatening to start a guitar clinic thread, but as far as I can see, his brother frequents the forum more than he does, that's right Fish, I'm calling you out buddy!
Anyway, the bass I'm building now: the neck is one I had my old bass teacher make to my specs years ago. The pickups are Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder Precision. The body is an alder Mockingbird that they're carving up for me at the Warmoth factory. It will also feature Hip Shot ultra light machines including a D-tuner to switch between drop D & standard E. The piece de resistance is a Hip Shot tremelo. It's something I've been wanting for awhile and there are actually a few songs where I had to do some old fashioned Jake E Lee machine head dives where it would have been much simpler to take it down with the trem. Besides, why should lead guitarists have all the whammy fun?
And Resonance, as for what kind of basses I prefer, I've owned and played Fender P basses, a Spectre, a B.C. Rich Mockingbird, an old Kramer, a Washburn acoustic, an Aria Explorer, probably some I'm forgetting. At the moment my main basses are a Fender American Jazz Sunset Orange finish which is super classy and traditional except for the custom knobs and a blue Yamaha SBV500 which is very lightweight for stage but growls nicely in the studio.

Dude, I wish I knew what the hell you were talking about. I have said many times, I am not a musician. I took private guitar lessons for about 2 months and took a guitar class for one semester in college, and a one other class I can't remember. And ya know what? None of it stuck with me. I can only listen to music. So unfortunately I can't even say "hey cool specs".
Oh, well. I suck.

Hey Voodoo. I'm certainly far from a guitar geek. I'm telling you, wait until Fish starts his thread. Homey lives for gear. He's got more axes than an executioner & more toys & software than my local guitar store!
In other words, he's a damn valuable part of the Witch circle. haha
I just try to find a simple sound I like and stick to it. I love collecting basses too but usually end up selling or trading one to get another. Part of what drew me to bass in the first place, as opposed to guitar or drums was the big warm simplicity and the way it makes the walls move.
But effects are fun too, in moderation.

| Ahh, your a Seymour Duncan fan huh? Thats obviously where you get the vintage, traditional sound in your bass, well for the most part. Apposed to EMG's i've found that Duncans have a lighter semi-softer sound instead of emg's having more of a high gain, kinda high pitch sorta sound. I've found that Dimarzio pick ups have the same range as Deymour duncans. But honestly: we all know that tremmy's are ment to be any axemans righthand man, lol, and your trying to steal that?! no i'm just kidding. Voodoo, honestly don't feel bad because i've been playing for near two years, and the only reason i know about specs on bass and guitars is because our family carries a huge musical passion, i was raised on it, this is how i know. or else my dumb ass wouldn't understand either. I'd be sitting there staring, trying to make sene of it.

Hey Jason -
That bass sounds cool man... I also prefer the Duncans in all my axes (except my Zakk Wylde LP, which comes with EMG's). The ones I built have Duncans, and as far as tremolos go, I used to use only Floyd Rose originals (one of my Jackson Rhoads still has one) but for the two guitars I built, I have been going with the string through, neck through configuration. They seem to have better tone and sustain as well.
What is Warmoth doing to the body.... carving it into a custom shape?
The flying V that I just built has a kickass custom paint job on it.... you might recognize the artwork I was inspired by...hehe http://home.adelphia.net/~steelreign/GIF/bodyfront2.JPG

Steelreign: That "Don't Break The Oath" V is awesome! One of the coolest guitars I've seen. And Warmoth is just routing the body to my specs in terms of pickup configuration, knob placement, bridge type & wood. The template will be the standard Mockingbird, ala B.C. Rich.
Resonance: I haven't yet recorded anything with Seymour Duncans. The EP was stock Fender Jazz pickups. The CD was stock Yamaha Humbuckers.
Hopefully the Duncans will meet or beat the tone on those and I'll use the new bass next time in the studio.
I had EMGs on my old 67 Precision Bass, but this time, I wanted to keep it passive. There are so many things to remember on the day of a show, let alone making sure your bass has a fresh battery.
