I have mentioned in a previous thread that while my job is steady work it is not ideal for me. I also mentioned in the 2008 resolution thread that I would like to lose weight. This thread is to help me keep track of that which I would like to change or improve. What I am going to do, and anyone can join me, is list my current situation, what I want my situation to be, and what steps I will take to get from point A to point B. Each day, or every few days, I will post an update of my progress. By keeping fellow LFM'ers in the loop I might be more inclined to stick to the program.

I already started keeping track of my exercise/weight lose efforts and I plan on doing the same for job improvements and home improvements.

Would anyone else like to join me in setting goals and achieving them together? I'll post again with all me details as soon as I get them sorted out.

Go for it Voodoo!  I fully support your efforts to lose weight.  But please keep in mind if you do any type of strength training, you'll actually gain weight because muscle is heavier than fat.  You may already know that and I don't want to be insulting, but for some that concept really hinders their progress.

It's best to be healthy.

Me, my progress is to not drink pop.  I'm hooked on the stuff and I rarely drink it.  I have about 3 pops a week.  But still, I'm trying to cut High Fructose Corn Syrup from my diet.  That stuff is horrible.  I'm also cutting down my spending to zilch.  Just food, rent and gas to get to work.  That means no more CDs, DVDs, fast food, etc.  That will be hard too.  I just need to save money because I am barely above the poverty level.

Voodoo, concerning your weight loss goals, have you been following any of the tips I have given you in various threads?
Like replacing your Durritos with nuts (or, pretzels at the very least), replacing any sodas or fruit juices (unless it's raw juice) with tea and water (put a teabag in a bottle of water, 1 bag for every 30 ounces), walking more often (like during your lunch break, or instead of driving shorter distances), avoiding processed foods, and sticking to whole grains, brown rices etc.

Jeremy, for my weight loss efforts so far I have begun walking more often. When it is nice outside I walk around my office or to the mall across the street. Overall it's a good distance - maybe a mile or so total. When the weather is bad I walk up and down the steps in my 10 story office building twice a day. At this point I am not looking to build muscle aside from toning my abs. Walking alone won't do the trick so I need to make time at home to work on things like that. I cleaned out my basement last week and I now have room to use my exercise equipment.

I am like Mr. Rottenbucher in that I drink too much soda, but my water intake has increased in the past 3 weeks. I don't drink a whole lot of juice, though. And tea is out of the question. Can't stand it.
As far as food is concerned, I don't eat a lot of chips or doritos. Crackers (like wheat thins or Ritz, although I don't if those are unhealthy or not), pretzels, fruit (sometimes veggies). The wife got me a bag of pistachio's so I have been munching on those at work. Breakfast is the worst for me. I find it hard to turn down a chocolate donut.

Walking will give you the kind of results you're looking for. You just need to add another mile or two to your routine.
Weight training is always good, but you should probably also get some cardio equipment. At least some basic stationary bike. That way, you'll have less of an excuse not to use it, since you can watch TV, read, or even get some work done, as you are exercising.

I'm not trying to push tea on you, but what kinds have you tried? There are all sorts of different herbal mixtures, not to mention that the different varieties of tea leaves all have a completely different taste. You could probably get a really fruity green tea blend, where you hardly taste the tea at all (which is why I stick to drinking it plain, since I love tea). Not to mention, green tea has EGCG, which can boost your metabolism. Aside from aiding in cancer prevention as well.

Crackers are bad for you. They may be better than, say potato chips, but they're still unhealthy. Unless you are getting whole wheat crackers, that are relatively natural, and high in fiber.

Sunflower seeds are also a good snack. Aside from the health benefits of eating more EFAs (and they are pretty high in nutrients), they also take a long time to eat (if you buy the ones that are still in the shell). You could easily spend an hour with a small bag. So if your work won't care about you spitting shells in a cup throughout the day, you should stick to those.
They are pretty cheap too, with small bags selling for about a quarter.

You should also try to eat an actual breakfast. Eggs (or egg whites), a salad, some whole wheat toast, yogurt, water, and a cup of coffee (not a big cup, and don't drink too much throughout the day), is relatively simple to prepare, and keeps you full for a while.
Avoid donuts, and all those shitty breakfast pastries.

Thanks for the tips on tea. Haven't tried too many varieties but I'll give green tea shot.

As for breakfast, I am up at 4:40 in the morning to get out of my house by 5:20. No time for an actual breakfast.

So prepare it the night before. It barely takes 15 minutes.
For a salad, just rip a heart of romaine lettuce in half, then cut it into smaller, 1 inch slices. Takes less than a minute.
Making scrambled eggs with some peppers, mushrooms and onions barely takes 10 minutes. Pulse the vegetables in the food processor, if you don't want to cut it up yourself. Spray the frying pan with olive oil Pam, and mix in the eggs (or egg whites) with the vegetables until they cook.
Then a quick cleanup, would only take about a minute or two.
If you don't like eggs when they are cold, nuke them for a minute or so in the morning. If you don't have enough time to eat it at home, take it to the office with you.

The cliche of "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" is 100% true.
