Okay, so I came home from work today to find that my dog's tail had uncurled. Ever since he was a puppy it's been curled upward and inward toward his lower back. Now it just kind of hangs there. Does anybody know what might cause this? I gave him a bath and a dose of flea treatment stuff last night, but I don't know if that would have caused it. I was reading up on it online earlier and it looks like it can be caused by injury, broken vertebrae or an infection...I'm sure there are other possibilities too. He doesn't appear to be in pain and he can still wag his tail, although not quite as vigorously as he normally does. It's really strange.

If anyone has heard anything about this condition, please let me know. He looks dumb with a tail that just hangs there.

He's an Australian Shepherd mix.  His tail has always been super curly so when I came home last night, I was a little alarmed.  Before we went to bed he acted like it was hurting him, and every time I tried to touch it he nipped at me.  I'm going to call the vet this morning and see what they have to say.

I'm taking him in this afternoon...hopefully it's nothing serious.  I read something online about a dog who was in a similar situation.  Because his owners waited a while before finally taking him to see a vet, his tail now has a crook in it and permanently lays down.  I guess the vertebrae in the tail had broken and started to reform in some weird shape.

Sounds like a broken tail.  Especially since your dog nipped at you.  Vet is the best call.  Hope the pooch is okay.

He's alright. They gave him a steroid shot and said he probably bruised it, but that it wasn't broken. I'm not so sure. It's curled back up, but now it seems to be a little more flexible than before. Oh well. The good news is that he's alright.
