Voodoo just did a review on Trivium's "Ascendancy"... (which can be found here : http://www.livingformetal.com/reviews/review.aspx?reviewid=22)...

I'm not familiar with Trivium...  So, if you are familiar with their material.. could you share your thoughts?

I'm not even sure what 'genre' they would fit in.

Thanks!!

P.S. Good review, Mr. Voodoo...

I really do not see the big hoopla over Trivium.  They are OK in my book.  I am not a real big fan of their vocalist.  He is too monotone all the time, no change in pitch,  no high no LOW.  Just alright.  The music is above average.  Most people dig them I think it is just another mediocre metal band that is making it BIG (UHUH Avenged Sevenfold). I havent heard their first album, but Ascendancy is the only one worth listening to.  Pick it up and make your own opinion,  Scale of 1 to 10,  7

Thanks for the info.

Voodoo's review also mentions the monotone vocals...  I'll give it a listen..

Omg, Trivium was so confusing for me at first! My favourite store in Quebec is called Trivium, and it's this big goth store, so whever I saw people wearing Trivium T-shirts I thought it was from that store. But yeah, then I saw a Trivium music video and it all made sense.

I really hate Trivium.  In my opinion they are another band getting hyped up by people who don't realize know enough metal to realize how derivitive these guys are.  The music is generic metalcore mixed with metallica, two things I don't like combined to make an even worse overall sound.  They also follow in the KSE "End of Heartache" pattern of throwing in a horrid melodic, clean vocal chorus any time a song actually starts to build up momentum.  Don't get me wrong, clean vocals can be great when they are done right...but in my opinion Matt Heafy's singing is terrible.

It's just annoying because the hype comes from your typical roadrunner fan who doesn't realize that underground metal has been going strong all along, more or less, and thinks that Trivium is the first band since Metallica to have a technically proficient lead guitarist.

I don't consider myself a typical fan of anything and I enjoy the cd Ascendency.  It's not the greatest I have ever heard but it's not bad, IMHO.  I know that Trivium is NOT the first band since Metallica to have a proficient lead guitarist.  Actually, I don't think Kirk Hammet is all that special.  He's better than I am but I can think of many who are much better, IMHO.

I also think I know a enough about all kinds of metal to have a valid opinion.

Yeah, I know what you're saying.  It's just a generalization of how I feel about the band in general, I know it doesn't apply to everyone and it isn't really fair to those who just happen to like it with no connection to the things I was complaining about.  Sorry if you took offense by what I said, it's just a rant.

I haven't actually heard a full album, but I've heard a couple songs and then saw them live, and it was enough to stop me from ever taking the time to listen to either of their albums.

I think the thing that got me going on Trivium  was that if you read reviews of their new album on amazon.com, so many people act like this is the rebirth of metal, the second coming of 80's megadeth, slayer, and metallica, jesus christ in metalcore form, etc.

It's all good, dude. I know it's just a rant. I do it too. I hardly ever pay attention to the reviews on Amazon except for a handful of those that REALLY seem to know what they are talking about.
I saw Trivium live at Ozzfest and I thought they were decent enough. Not spectacular but decent. The thing with Trivium is although they are very similar to a lot of current bands what set them apart to me was first the age and second the ferocity in which they played. Now, just because a band plays hard does not mean they are good musicians. However, with Trivium I think they are pretty good musicians and because they are so young they get grow and progress. And I certainly do not believe they are a rebirth of anything, that's for sure. Just a continuation of what is already available.

I suppose I can get down off my soapbox now.
