My first introduction to doom metal were through the bands Pentagram and St. Vitus. Although by todays standards they may seem out dated, they are still the forefathers of this glorious form of music. Other bands that forged the way for doom are Candlemass, Trouble and Witchfinder General. Once I discovered Trouble and their sabbath like riffs I was hooked. Even though I didn't dig their lyrics, their music more than made up for it. I still listen to "Psalm 9" and "The Skull" today. Classic albums that stand the test of time. Another classic album is Candlemass "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus". I would consider these 3 albums must haves to any doom metal fan. Another must have that is a bit more modern is Catherdral's "Forest Of Equilibrium". Pure beautiful sorrow. Some newer bands that get my goat going would be the almighty My Dying Bride, even though not really "new", still heavy as balls! Others include Daylight Dies, Swallow The Sun, High On Fire, Mourning Beloveth, and The Sword. I hope this helps you in your search for one of the most powerful forms of music today. As with all metal, even doom metal has sub-genres be it stoner, epic or gothic. I for one am not a fan of the gothic type....to polished for my taste. DOOM ON!!!

I'm not a *huge* doom fan and don't know much about the genre, but I'd like to get into more of it.  I've heard lots of great stuff about most of the bands mentioned, and one in particular that I really like is Cathedral.  I also saw Solitude Aeturnus last weekend, and I'll be checking out some of their stuff.

We should keep a running tally of the bands mentioned so far.

Insanity takes its toll, so please, have exact change.

Daylight Dies is a really good Doom Metal band, I forgot to mention them.

I have been getting into Cathedral and Electric Wizard a lot lately.

And to Beer Drinker and Hell Raiser I don't think bands like Trouble are outdated! I look for doom metal bands that sound close to bands like St. Vitus and Pentagram. Good shit all around!!!

I've been listening to Funeral's new one lately...it rules!  I've also been listening to a lot of Cathedral.
