That's not the Pentagram that's on Relapse, is it? I think I heard there were two bands by that name, I heard the relapse band but I don't think it was doom.

I think it is the Same Pentagram, They did release one CD on Relapse in 2001 "First Daze Here" But you have to check out some of their earlier albums, "Pentagram" or "Day of Reckoning" or "Be Forewarned" to get a real sample of the band. Cracking stuff in my opinion

that new band I reviewed, and Interviwed. Lair Of The Minotaur..Have a Doom sound to them..But are very heavy, some mid to up tempo songs..with evil sounding guitars as well..Sounds a bit Like Old Celtic Frost... Check Out Morbid Tales by Celtic Frost...they started that doom sound with those twisted, sick riffs... \m/

Don't forget funeral doom, as that shit is perfect for cold winters and lightless days. Locking everything out of mind and just listening to bands like Shape of Despair (and their huge, slow guitar barriers) is always an emotional experience.
As for the genre in general, it's one of those things that are hard to master, as there's a really thin line between hypnotizing and boring. Guess it all goes down to those small details that really make the longer songs work. Plus it seems to be one of the most intimate styles out there, so it's no wonder why some stuff just doesn't work for all people.

It's because of that thin line that I never really got into the genre. I love Green Carnation (one of my favorite bands actually), Candlemass, Opeth, Amorphis, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Grey Skies Fallen and some other doom and doom influenced bands. But for the genre as a whole, it never really appealed to me too much. Some of it can just sound so dark and sinister but a lot of it just puts me to sleep.

I never really figured Opeth for doom metal, but some of their passages do fit quite nicely. Overall I think they defy categorization, though.
My 2 cents.....
As long as I got Rock n Roll I'm forever young

The Crying Orc (1/31/2006) What about Sleep? Would you consider "Dopesmoker" to be a Doom album? It is very Sabbath style.
Sleep is sludge; which is a form of Doom.
Sleep is also one of the heaviest bands ever.
