I'm starting to get into more black metal, so I'm finding myself straying from the more accessible symphonic music (not that I listened to that much of it in the first place) and getting into more of the "troo" black metal stuff.  Or something like that.

On Doomer's side, though, the cave-like production quality found on a lot of albums really does turn people off to the stuff.  A lot of people just can't tolerate it, and you can't exactly blame them.

Dimmu Borgir has to be one of my favorite bands. I got their new album last night and I listened to the whole thing. The story behind the album is amazing, about a Christian crusader who finds out that his true inner being isn't supposed to be a Christian, but "a heretic, a devil's advocate or perhaps...the manifestation of the Devil himself......an instrument to enlighten certain outstanding individuals, the chosen few..." I think all of Dimmu's stuff is great. They might not be "true black metal" any more, but they're still black metal

BreedingtheSpawn (4/28/2007)Dimmu Borgir still Black Metal, yeah that's a joke.

Some people would call Dimmu "Symphonic Black Metal" and others would call it "Symphonic Death Metal" on top of the just plain "Is it Death or is it Black?" controversy. Same type of shit gets stormed up over the word/classification "Progressive."

Personally, I think it's hard to draw the line between the genres anymore. I mostly just use them to give a general idea of what the music sounds like, but the battles (just for example) about whether something deserves to be called thrash or whether it became shitty metalcore just because Hot Topic sells the shirts can get kind of ridiculous. I will admit that I'm am guilty of this too. I used to like Shadows Fall and Killswitch Engage, and then when I started seeing the "mallcore" 14-year-olds with shitty bangs talking about how cool those bands were, I kinda lost interest.

I think Dimmu has a lot more in common with speed/thrash now than they do with BM or death metal.

What you used to love now, you're gonna adore. With Charmin Ultra, less is more. Cha Cha Cha, Charmin.

I really only like PME and DCA.  The rest of their material is rather "meh" to me.  I prefer what Galder does in Old Man's Child much more.
