If you're just starting getting into Black Metal, I'd suggest listening to these albums by these bands:
Under The Sign Of The Black Mark by Bathory
A Blaze In The Northern Sky by Darkthrone
Si Monumentum Requires, Cirxumspice by DeathSpell Omega
The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh by Cradle Of Filth
By the way, Ambient Black Metal is definitely not crap. It is very good.
For examples of this style, listen to Velvet Cacoon. The Kovenant are not Ambient Black Metal.

lol it doesn't matter what the Kovenant is. its horrible. Industrial is the worst music ever. i hate it.

I dont care for Black Metal that much but I like Bathory alot!YES!!! Bathory's "Blood Fire Death" is a good place to start your BM collection. Also, another Symphonic (and under-rated) BM band to check out is Italy's Graveworm
