I can't believe there is not a thread regarding this band. It is one of my absolute favorites simply because it thought the whole folk/viking metal genre seriously unlike other bands. Not that I don't enjoy those bands as well, it's just that Moonsorrow conveys the darkness and difficulties of those times. Any other thoughts? If not Moonsorrow, what are some of everyone else's favorites?

This is a really excellent release. While it is missing those epic moments that make Moonsorrow so great, the music is very primitive and cold sounding, which really fits this particular genre. Definitely worth checking out for fans of this genre.

Well, I picked this up with my preorder of Nostradamus and it is kicking my ass in. First of all, Excellent production. Each instrument is clear and powerful and [i]moving[/i]. I would describe Gunnar's bass tone on this particular album as two things: First and foremost would be that it is fucking punishingly heavy and second, that it shakes the rear-view mirror in my car on the lowest volume setting. Heri and Terji's guitar crushes more than a documentary on black holes and the inevitability of utter and complete destruction of everything mankind ever endeavored to create. (Maybe not THAT crushing but it pounds like a world class wrestler). This being my first real introduction to the band - I have listened to Eric the Red and Ragnarok before but not entirely mindfully - I would lay shame on those calling this a viking metal band. Yes, they sing in their native language and sing about their ancestors but musically they sound like a more folkish version of Confessor if that makes any sense. Hell, the only reason I am posting this hear is because the Metal Archives has them labeled [i]progressive viking metal[/i] which, I find to be an unfathomable genre title. Gatu Rima is my favorite song so far. I love the uplifting chorus and the vocal melodies. The middle instrumental section also soars.

The Folk/Viking Metal thread seemed to be more fitting for this band since their newest release has really gotten away from a lot of the doom elements present in their earlier releases.

Anyway, where the hell can a guy get a hold of Resound the Horn for relatively cheap, i.e., around $12?

Musical material of the album “The Patriot” was composed along with material of album “Waves Are Dancing” in 2003, but it was not included in it, however hasn’t come in it owing to discrepancy in style. This album is an experimental for Holy Blood because of it’s deviation from stylistics of the previous albums.
Compositions of the album “The Patriot” are bright mix of sympho black and folk-black metal. Initially, album "The Patriot" has been conceived as studio work, herefore songs submitted on it will not be played at band’s concerts.
Nevertheless, compositions on this album cannot be mixed up with another band, as to them the basic are typical features of the band: powerful dynamics, rigid submission, aggressive screaming and a female back-vocal, and also bright slavonic melodies.

Holy Blood «The Patriot»

Hailing from Ukraine, Holy Blood combines traditional folk music with the speed and heaviness of death and black metal. The frequent use of instruments not often found in hard music, such as the flute and keyboards, along with several different vocal styles results in a full and distinctive sound that the band pulls off rather well. Compared to their first two albums, The Patriot is slightly heavier and has a stronger Viking metal influence a la Slechtvalk. The Patriot shows that Holy Blood is well accomplished at what they do; however, the album is relatively short and lacks any standout tracks like those found on their last release, Waves Are Dancing. Still, this is a solid album that provides a unique listening experience.

What does everyone think of these guys. I'm listening to them right now and I think they are the best Finnish melodic death metal band. I think their guitar work is even better than Bodom's. I also love how their keys are more in the background and play folk melodies.

So, I listened to my first Finntroll album last night. I didn't get a chance to listen to it closely, as I was working while it was playing... but at first listen I'm thinking it is pretty damned cool...

Very unique with lots of different vibes & atmospheres..

Those of you with more knowledge and experience in regard to Finntroll... I'd sure appreciate it, if you could comment on this band (good or bad).

Thanks to Efil's review, I have purchased my first Folk Metal album!! Korpiklaani's "Voice Of Wilderness".

According to his review, it seems to be his favorite.. So, I might have started off with one of the best... Well, I've listened to it a couple of times now... and I gotta tell ya... It's pretty damned cool...

Very memorable choruses (almost addictive)... and full of upbeat folk..
