seen tromeo and juliet didn't like and the toxic avenger sequels suck, the original is the best, I watched the sequels a few times, but I found them quite boring.

Kabukiman is decent. It's probably the least perverted and bloody of the Troma flicks I've seen so far. I have Nuke'em High and Tromeo and Juliet in my Netflix queue. I watched Terror Firmer yesterday, but I thought that one sucked. Cannibal: The Musical was good and I had forgotten that one was a Troma film.

I don't know if I'll go any further once I see Tromeo and Nuke'Em High. Most of the rest just looks just plain terrible rather than terrible/awesome.

I like Troma stuff, Toxic Avenger is the best, haven't seen Sgt. Kabukiman yet, probably gonna get it here soon, Class of Nuke'em High is good as well, I;mnot too big on their newer stuff, not really into the raunchy turn they have taken, I mean the old stuff is, but not nearly as much as the newer releases they have had. But Troma is most definitley unique.

Glad too see Poultrygeist is finally out though, I went to a Horror Convention back in '06 and Lloyd Kauffman was their promoting it, got to meet him too, nice guy a little odd, but nice.

Watched Tropic Thunder last night. It's pretty funny. Got a strange tidbit to share... In the film Ben Stiller's character (an actor) played a retard in another of his films and really hammed up the retard. He gets into a discussion with Robert Downey Jr. and RDJ tells him that the Oscar winning retards never go "full-on retarded". Like Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man was a lovable card shark and Forrest Gump was retarded but somehow a pingpong champ and a war hero. "Does that sound like any retard you've ever known?"

Anyhow... in the special features there's a feature listed as "Dreamworks Public Service Announcement". I clicked on it... It's basically a PSA campaigning against the word "retard". A bunch of smiley shiny happy pictures of mentally challenged people and the tag line is something like "They deserve one R word... and that's Respect".

Talk about covering your ass. Feels about as genuine as tobacco companies being forced to sponsor anti-tobacco ads.

Anyone seen Mother of Tears yet? I'm thinking about renting it, but I've heard good and terrible and so terrible it's good. I saw Suspiria a few years ago and I thought it was okay, but it didn't blow me away like a lot of people. Never seen Inferno. Not sure if I really need to watch the other two before I would watch Mother of Tears or not.

Bare and I have been talking about seeing this movie, and I've said from the beginning that it was going to be incredibly awesome or fucking horrible (but was leaning more towards fucking horrible). I watched Speed Racer and The Strangers last night.

Speed Racer was a lot cooler than I expected. I had high expectations when I heard about it and who was directing it, but then it became one of the biggest box office flops ever. But since it was done by the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix) I did expect some visuals like nothing I had ever seen and it definitely delivered that. If nothing else, it's extremely original and really does feel like a live-action/cartoon blend, which fits the source material. It does run long though... over two hours of A.D.D. neon spazz. Anyhow, I give it a pretty good recomendation, especially if you have young boys that like cars and bright flashy colors.

The Strangers was creepy at times, but basically a connect-the-dots psychological horror movie with an assload of cliches, zero plot (not really a surprise there), and disapointingly (and surprisingly) very little gore even in the unrated edition.

I watched the other three Toxic Avenger films. They're all pretty funny and worth seeing even though the fourth one literally apologizes for II and III as total crap in the intro and says something about IV being the "real" sequel. IV is by far the raunchiest of them all. Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD is a main character in IV and so now I wanna watch that Troma series also.

As for new releases... I watched the new Hulk and it was pretty good. I was expecting a stand-alone film that would play out the origin story for half the film (like Batman Begins) but it actually sorta works as a sequel to the other Hulk movie. The opening credits basically cover the whole accident and transformation scenario within a few minutes.

As far as Samurai flicks go, a big part of my recent obsession over them is that our public library has a lot of them, surprisingly, and not surprisingly hardly anyone picks over the foreign section like they do all the other categories. I've seen all the Akira Kurosawa Samurai films, I think. Ran is probably my fav samurai flick. Some modern ones (made after 2000) I watched recently that were really good were The Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade. They have very little fight scenes and they're more just feudal family dramas. Same director and I think both won Japanese equivalents of Oscars. Samurai Fiction is another modern one that's cool. Kinda reflects some of the same vibes as Kill Bill 1. I watched another recently made one called When the Last Sword is Drawn, but I didn't care for that one as much. There's a recent version of Zatoichi, The Blind Swordsman that was very cool. As far as action and pacing, I'd probably recommend that one.

Some of the old ones (1950s-1960s) I've watched within the last few weeks are Samurai Rebellion, The Sword of Doom, Harakiri, and Kwaidan. Kwaidan is supposedly a classic. Samurai/Ghost Story. I think yahoo! once ranked it on the best list of ghost movies, but I couldn't even finish it. I thought it was terrible and boring. Probably out of that group I'd say I liked Harakiri most.

If you like goofy kung-fu stuff, you should check out Stephen Chow's flicks. Shao-Lin Soccer and Kung-Fu Hustle are his most well done ones as far as DVD quality and budget.

Missed Josh's post originally but I used to love watching poorly dubbed kung fu movies. Samurai movies fit right in to that genre. If I had more time I would watch more of both.

I've been watching a bunch of old Samurai movies that nobody on here probably cares about so I'll spare you all that. I did see Hancock though and it was not so great. The first half was awesome but about halfway through there are couple plot twists that are totally lame and sappy and stupid. Again, it's pretty hard not to like Will Smith, but the script and plot in the second half ruin it. Supposedly it's based on a comic book though, which I've never read or seen, so maybe some of the dumbness originated there.

After watching Escape from NY & LA I decided to check out another cult classic: Big Trouble in Little China. I'd only seen a few bits and pieces of this one over the years. It's a lot of fun and a crazy blender of genres as far as action/comedy/kung-fu/fantasy. Lately I've been selling a lot more DVDs then buying, but think I'm going to have to get that one for my collection. I think to complete my Kurt Russell/John Carpenter run, I'm going to have to rent The Thing which is another cult classic I've never seen all the way through.

I watched an indie horror flick last night called Otis about a fat retarded guy that kidnaps girls and makes them into his twisted prom dates. It was decent. It was a lot more horror satire than it was scary or tense. A lot of the jokes and acting were really lame but it had a few moments of brilliance.

A few months ago after someone brought up Re-Animator on this thread, I rented Bride of the Reanimator. I had the same sound consistency problem you just mentioned with that one. There weren't captions on the disc either, so I got pissed off and didn't even finish it.

I had heard the same things about the movie, which is what prompted me to check it out. Unfortunately, it was not exactly as advertised. It is closer to Evil Dead than Dead Alive, but neither movie is a good reference. The movie has a twist ending that is somewhat effective, but it is not entirely reliant on the big "reveal”. My biggest complaint is how everyone speaks in a god damn whisper while the other effects, i.e., motorcycle and car engines, explosions, etc. are entirely way too loud. I spent half the movie adjusting the volume.

Overall, though, I would say throw it on your list, but there is no need to move it to the top.
