I can't stand Sunn O))) either, but I agree with Metalhead that it's more ambient noise than it is Doom Metal. I would probably lump them into the generic category of "experimental." I have their first and enjoy it when the right mood strikes me, which is probably necessary for all doom metal. My Dying Bride incorporate just enough of a Gothic element to make them listenable for me. Straight up doom metal, i.e., Trouble, St. Vitus, etc., do little for me. I will give them another shot someday, I suppose.

That sounds sooooo dirty and wrong.

I could have sworn I had a My Dying Bride album at one point in time, but I was thinking of Virgin Black. I had Elegant...and Dying for a few months, listened to it a couple of times and then sold it. Now I'm kind of regretting that.

And back to the topic at hand, I'm sure I would probably like My Dying Bride, though I know nothing about them. I've been listening to a lot of different stuff lately now that I've finally thrown my Nick Lachey CD away.

Euro-doom is often similar to that sub-genre (I will not say the name of that sub-genre for bands I like).

Boris is alright, but I never really got into those albums. There's much better drone out there.

I really enjoy Sunn O))), I don't know where all the hate comes from.

I forgot to mention Katatonia, but MegaDoomer beat me to it. They're pretty damn good.
I'm not exactly a Type O Negative fan. The music bores me.
I also saw their vocalist after a show one time. Luckily I didn't like the music before I saw him so I cannot be accused of hating a band because of how the members act.

A good NYC doom band is Grey Skies Fallen.

I really dig the newest My Dying Bride album. I would like to hear some of their older albums, but that takes money I don't really have right now. Anathema was mentioned earlier as well, and that's another band I'd really like to check out based on the sound clips I have heard.

If you do like My Dying Bride, I would recommend checking out Katatonia as well. The Great Cold Distance is their newest one, and their best, in my opinion.

I may be alone here on this, because I know a lot of people hate them, but a doomy band I like is Type O Negative. Some of their stuff is pretty cheesy, but when it's cheesy, it's usually in self parody.

I'll give it a whirl, but understanding lyrics is very important to me. I've found a few Folk bands whose lyrics are in other languages, and I enjoy it, but it really depends on their sound. If they can hold my attention with the music, then lyrics aren't so important, but it must be the perfect balance.

Lyrics don't mean anything. Find music you like, that's all. There's no order as to which bands you can check out.

But isn't the chick who sings on the newer Cradle of Filth albums the chick from Green Carnation? I've always thought that for some reason...I guess someone needs to do some research. I'm shocked that I'm this far out in left field.

I'm not bashing Sun O)))! My live experience was horrific, yes, but I do respect what they do. It's genius really, but just not my thing, and I doubt it will ever be. They were my first true exposure to the genre so now when I think of Doom, I relate it to Sun O))), and I'm thankful to know now that I am wrong in this thought. That's all...

I've heard of Thorr's Hammer before, maybe from the board, I don't know. I've never listened to it though. I think I should probably familiarize myself with bands who write their lyrics in English before moving on to Norwegian lyrics.

I never would've considered Sabbath to be Doom. I guess you're right though! Green Carnation is Doom too? They have the chick vocalist, right? I've only heard a few songs, but I thought they were Euro-goth. I'll check them out next. Sun O)))) really ruined this genre for me, so I'm trying to keep an open mind.

I've never had much of an appreciation for Doom due to lack of exposure, so I chose this band to pop my Doom cherry. I'm listening to Sinamorata at the moment, and really digging it. With a little patience, I think I could be a fan.
