My Dying Bride

I've never had much of an appreciation for Doom due to lack of exposure, so I chose this band to pop my Doom cherry. I'm listening to Sinamorata at the moment, and really digging it. With a little patience, I think I could be a fan.

WEll I actually got into the genre like two years ago. I love a lot of the proto-doom and some of the big timmers. My favorites would have to include:

The Sword

So I heard about this band out of Austin (hello, DZ!!) called The Sword. I heard a sample [url=http://www.kemado.com/site/media.php?req=show&artist=8]here[/url] and it is rockin! Very doomy, ala early Sabbath. Indeed, that is the band they are most compared to. I hear it. This sample is as riff-laden as anything from Iommi in the early years.

A new album will be recorded in the fall for a spring 2009 release.

I've heard a lot how this album is amazing, groundbreaking, etc. I think it's pretty subpar. Am I missing something or?

I'm quite the Doom newbie though. I like Solitude Aeturnus and Candlemass... That's about it. Well, and Black Sabbath.

Ohhhhh man, this band is great. Totally stoned-out, authentic '70s-sounding doom. I'd heard a little bit of their stuff and then saw them last week (I think) at a small bar in Lawrence, KS. It was incredible! As my better half said, "This is the closest thing you'll get to being back in the '70s." They covered a Pentagram song at the end of their set, which is apparently what they're doing throughout this tour they're on. Very cool to experience while under the influence of a green leafy substance. :D

Great band. Just got into them recently. Pretty much on the stoner side of doom. Havent heard them go check them out. If you like doom metal you more then likely will dig these guys.

I only have Forest of Equalibrium and The Carinval Bizarre, but aside from Dorrian's odd vocal approach (kind of like Tom Warrior of Celtic Frost) it's great. Awesome riffage.

Swallow The Sun

For all of you looking for a doom band to sink your teeth into, may I suggest the band Swallow The Sun. A Finnish band that understands the beauty of music played with sorrow and despair. Slow to medium paced thick and sludgy riffs that reek of gloom. Take a dash of old Paradise Lost, sprinkle in some My Dying Bride but only heavier (if you can imagine that) and add to that some of the most over the top death metal vocals and you've got Swallow The Sun. I can not recommend this band enough. Nothing "gothic" about this band, just pure gloom and doom. Their new album "Hope" should be out sometime this summer, but they have 2 other albums out now...."The Morning Never Came" (killer title!!) and Ghosts Of Lost. Run now kiddies!!!!!

Check out Count Raven. They sound just like them. Infact the singer sounds just like Ozzy. But still the band is great and still pretty original even though they sound like a Sabbath clone.

www.doomshallrise.de is a nice festival in Göppingen, near Stuttgart, in the south of Germany.

It was foundet in 2003 and it takes place in an old US-Army Chapel.
