Dont know if you remember me, I come over from the UK in 1982 and meet you through Mike Verganes radio show in Houston. I spent a few days with you and an old girlfriend called Randy. We watched Watchtower and i stayed with you at your mums house. You gave me a silver cross and asked me to make it so it hung upside down.

If you remember me, it would be great to get in touch. I have recently got back in touch with Mike Vergane after 20 years.

Junkyard, RhinoBucket and Dangerous Toys 2008

Junkyard, RhinoBucket and Dangerous Toys look like they are trying to formulate a few shows for 2008.

Probably with McMaster's commitment to BrokenTeeth's new album, Electric, he won't be able to tour much with Toys, but I'll take what I can get. What's with Roach and McMaster not doing a show in Austin!? What, does RhinoBucket need gas money to get all the way down here? I'll pitch in a few bucks

To me it doesn't sound much like the Jason McMaster I'm familiar with.

I was watching to an DToys dvd from 1992 and they played an unreleased song and I was wondering if anyone knows the name of the song...

The lyrics goes like this "one, eight hundred, 1-800 nails" or something like this, I'm not very good in english :unsure:

I swear I have somewhere a version (on cassette) of the self-titled album by Dangerous Toys that has a different song on it. I could be going crazy, but I'm thinking its a kick ass guitar solo instrumental on it. I keep searching for info on it, but can't find it anywhere, so maybe I am going crazy. I should look to see if I can find the cassette, but I know it's in the storage room that needs to be cleaned out. Anyone have an idea what song I am talking about, or am I crazy?

After three decades of folk, rock, metal and hip-hop, the Back Room is closing its doors July 29.

The club at 2015 E. Riverside Drive has drawn crowds to its cavernous darkness for 33 years.

"I am numb and feel as if one of my family has just died," Back Room booker Phillip Nitch said.

During the early 1980s, the room was a top destination for touring acts — Cheap Trick, Motorhead, the Ramones, Public Enemy and Richard Thompson — and an incubator for homegrown talents. Later it became known as the city's headquarters for heavy metal.

Recently, gigs by Texas hip-hop acts had made a vital contribution to the club, which includes a 600-person-capacity performance space, a large pool hall and a beer garden.

There are no plans to move the business.

Former Back Room manager Mark Olivarez, brought back to the club for its final month, said Wednesday that owner Ronnie Roark has not sold the venue's Rivertown Mall location. Roark was not available for comment.

"The club business has changed," Olivarez said. "After 33 years, we thought it was time to close."

He added that many of the mall's surrounding businesses think that location is slated for mixed-use development or condominiums. Several large residential and commercial projects have been announced for land north of Riverside Drive, some of those fronting Town Lake. This is among the first signs of redevelopment south of the street.

General Manager Sean McCarthy announced plans for a series of final concerts, with former Dangerous Toys frontman Jason McMasters closing the venue.

"I can tell you he will be the last one to walk off that stage," McCarthy said. Dangerous Toys, part of the hair metal explosion in the late 1980s, got its start at the Back Room.

The club began life in 1973 in the space currently occupied by the Thundercloud Subs shop on East Riverside Drive. After the venue moved to its current location in the late '70s, its owners bought the Copper Dollar bar next door, turning it into a game room in the early '80s.

During that era, the Back Room hosted roots rock bands such as the LeRoi Brothers, Commandos, and Omar and the Howlers. Touring acts and metal bands started filling the hall in the late '80s.

The Back Room was one of the very first clubs booked for the South by Southwest Music Festival and has been home to a SXSW showcase every year. The festival has directed hip-hop acts to the Back Room, one of its only East Austin venues, since 1999; weekly hip-hop shows are a recent innovation.

Though the metal acts usually booked at the Back Room are likely to find a home at downtown clubs such as Redrum, Emo's and Room 710, the hip-hop gigs may prove more problematic to house. With its midsize capacity and an indestructible feel, the Back Room proved a perfect venue for Texas hip-hop stars such as Bun B, Chamillionaire, Devin the Dude and Austin rappers.

Rapid Ric, a DJ and rising talent in the Texas hip-hop scene, said the club on East Riverside Drive was an ideal location. He was unsure what could rise to take its place.

"Hip-hop venues are like the table where the popular kids don't sit," Ric said. "It's tough to say, 'This club will take the Back Room's place.' It will just sort of happen."

Emo's recently started booking hip-hop acts at its new Emo's Lounge venue at Sixth and Red River streets.

McCarthy denied that the closing had anything to do with the sexual assault charges filed Tuesday against Daniel Bill Garza, 20, who authorities say met at least one of the female victims, who ranged in age from 19 to 25, at the Back Room.

The venue's closing "has been in the works for over a year," McCarthy said.

sad
but honorable closing night.
i plan at some point in the next two weeks , to do a video taped walk
thru/narration of the famous club, for my personal and maybe even
worldwide
dvd release somewhere on a documentary.

Oddest Toys Experience...

Having seen the guys several times over the years (1st time opening for Warrant at AstroWorld way back when; last time May 2005 in Austin for the 18 year anniversary show) and having met various members at various shows, I would have to say that the oddest experience I was able to witness was the stopping of a show at Hurricane Alley (Houston) in the mid 90's due to a TABC raid (I do not remember the exact date of the show). The Toys were in mid song when we saw someone with a flashlight from the side of the stage signalling them to stop. Next thing we knew, TABC officers were checking IDs and taking people out. My friend and I sat on the edge of the stage with our ID's in our mouths (kinda stupid now that I think about it) as the various officers walked around. When we left, there was a small army of individuals sitting on the sidewalk area ready to be hauled off. The show never continued and we were one of the lucky (legal) ones able to leave on our own....

In hopes of sparking a bit of conversation on the DT board, what is the oddest thing you've experienced at a DT show?

Halloween is around the corner & a friend is having an 80's theme Costume party . Well after weeks of scratching my head and then some LOL .I had a friend suggest i go as Slash ! he's from the 80's right . well after scavenging thru some old clothes and what not ..i came up with some cool stuff to wear And even found that tophat (that was not ez i tell u ). But my dilema now is what T-shirt to wear??? slash always wore some rock t-shirt or no shirt . well after visiting the site today I said "fuck it!! " I'm gonna sport my DT 18th anniv. shirt !!! CUZ as much as i love GnR . I'm a texas bro & my toys fucking RULE !!!!!!!!! any way just thought i'd post this & vent a bit ..Now I'm gonna go figure out how i am ever going to squeeze my ass into those leather pants i still have from back in 89' !! Shadows Fall does Teasn Pleasn

Ok, so I've officially heard the Shadows Fall cover of Teas'n Pleas'n (with Jason on vocals).

It's awesome... tuned down at least 1 step!!

In case you didn't know, Shadows Fall released "The War Within" in 2004 and on the Japanese release the bonus track is Dangerous Toys' "Teas'n Pleas'n". Shadows Fall recorded the music and sent it to Jason. Jason then put vocals on it and sent it back.. They were going to put their own vocals on the song and just keep a small section with Jason singing... but after hearing Jason's version of the song... they left all of Jason's vocals on it...

It's killer... (and it is a very exact cover... they changed very little of the song)

Anybody else heard it?

The first leg of the MIT featuring Jon Oliva's Pain (led by Savatage mastermind, Jon Oliva),

Oliva adds, "This small gesture is one way that the bands can express their respect for the tireless sacrifice that these soldiers endure for their family's and the country. Our military are die-hard metal fans, and they deserve whatever we can do for them"!

I have listened to alot of your music for years and was wondering if we may play it on my station ???
