Mainly, crazily out of place. I have about 45 rap CDs. From Run DMC to Master P.

1. How did you come by acquiring these CDs?
Over the last 10 years. I started listening to rap when I was 11. Ice-T was a major impact on my life.

2. Is it something you used to listen to often, or still do?
Yes. I usually listen to my Ice-T, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Too $hort, Spice 1, NWA, MC Eiht CDs at least once every 2 weeks.

3. What about it did you like that led you to acquire it, or keep it?
I got most of my rap CDs when I was in Columbia House. I love 'em so I keep 'em. But why I love them varies. Some are great feats of beats, others amazing tales and fabrications of urban life. Others remind me of home, like Insane Clown Posse and Esham. Others remind me of those silly rap fads when I was in High School, like Master P. And then there are folks like Paris, who have strong political statements. Rap for me is a guilty pleasure that sometimes is a source of humor and inspiration

RE: Assignment LFM
voodoo (6/23/2007)

Metalhead87 (6/23/2007)
Dew Scented and Callenish Circle aren't really that mallcore, poser shit. Didn't really want to listen to anything harsh, so I plopped down in bed and turned my stereo on for the first time in a long time (usually listen to music in the car or on the computer). It holds 51 CD's and I searched a little bit for something soothing. Found Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, one of my all time favorite peices of music. I skipped right to the 4th movement which contains the choral part. I think right around the 3 minute mark or so is when the more memorable part comes in.

Absolutely love that music. I will stop whatever I am doing if I hear it. So incredible. So uplifting in every way.

RE: Assignment LFM

The CD: Girls Against Boys-Freak*on*ica

1. I like a lot of classic rock, stuff like Stevie Ray Vaughn, drum corps music, and I do enjoy a good classical piece from time to time. But I would have to say that the CD I get the strangest looks because of is Dwight Yoakam's acoustic album.

1. How did you come by acquiring this CD?
I bought it while working at a music store.

2. Is it something you used to listen to often, or still do?
I used to listen to it pretty frequently when I was in high school.

3. What about it did you like that led you to acquire it, or keep it?
We played it in the store when it came out and I became attached to it. The music was so upbeat but his voice was so haunting, and I really liked that contrast. Eventually I decided to buy the album and I still have it six years later.

4. etc.
I was on a country music kick for about 6 months in my senior year of high school because of this album, but not the crap-ass Toby Keith and Alan Jackson stuff. It was more older country and really depressing stuff.

RE: Assignment LFM

i love SRV. my dad saw him live before. hes a texas guy :)

RE: Assignment LFM

Kenny Wayne Shepard

Blues guitar virtuoso. I really like those a lot. 9 albums and a bunch of rarities by Beck, which was the first live show I ever saw, by the way... 6 albums by Radiohead. 9 albums by Ween... very weird, but awesome stuff.

I've got a whole bunch of rap CDs as well. My fav rapper is Kool Keith who has also put out CDs under the name of Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom, and Mr. Nogatco. Weird as hell, but I love it. Huge fan of the Beastie Boys, have all their albums. Also like Wu-Tang Clan and some of the solo Wu-Tang stuff. I've got some of the old shit too, like some Run DMC albums and EPMD.

Uhh... I've got some electronica stuff that I listen to quite often as well, like The Crystal Method, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, etc.

Probably the one I'd say sticks out most is Dummy by Portishead. It's sorta trip-hop with jazz styled female vocals. That's like my chillout rainy day CD right there.

RE: Assignment LFM

First off- some Rusted Root thing!
1. Some Rusted Root thingy. My mom bought it for me for Christmas last year because I met one of the members.
2. I never listened to that thing in the first place.
3. I don't know why I keep it. It just sits on my shelf.
Second- the School of Rock soundtrack!
1. I think I bought it when I was 12, after I saw the movie. I really liked some of the songs.
2. I listen to one or two of the songs on my iPod, but just one song by The Who and one by The Doors...
3. I really ought to get rid of that thing.

Finally- Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols!
1. I bought it when I was 12 after hearing the Sex Pistols on Rhapsody and deciding I loved Anarchy in the U.K. I think I got it in Detroit.
2. I still listen to all of the songs except "Bodies," which I hate because of my strongly pro-choice views.
3. Can't remember when or why I got this CD. Must have been on a mellow kick or something. I may have gotten it just because. Whatever the reason may have been, I'm glad I did. Great pop songs. Very simple and soothing. He is a great songwriter and a cool guy. The song Somebody's Crying is so freakin catchy I can't help but tap my feet along with it. If it sounds good, and it's unique, i like it for the most part.

I've got a bunch of old ska, like Voodoo Glow Skulls, Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake that I used to listen to WAY back in the day, as well as a lot of Good Riddance and Bad Religion albums. I listen to the ska every once in a while just for a good laugh, but the others stay in a regular rotation on my MP3 player, and my computer.

I'd say one of the cd's I still listen to a large amount has probably got to be Underdogs by Matthew Good Band. They're from vancouver, and although i hate the guys in the band, this album really opened up my eyes to a greater volume of music. It's depressing, it's dark, and extremely simple minded, but it changed the way i analyzed music, and helped me open up to so many more bands. I bought the cd because my cousin was really into them, and i really looked up to him in my youth. Definitely still makes an occasional appearance in my car or wherever, and it still brings the same level of excitement it did the first time i listened to it.
RE: Assignment LFM

Most out of place music in my collection would be 2 Live Crew As Nasty As They Want To Be. This was the second release by this band, after the very succesful self-titled debut. This CD contained the song Hang on St. Christopher, which lead me to buy it from a used CD store near College Park Maryland. Was a cool little ditty that didn't quite fit the style from the previous album, but I think that's why I liked it. Has a cool groove, very laid back for a metal song. Haven't pulled this out in a long time cuz I have so many other CD's to listen to but back in the day it was sort of a regular.

In the non-rock and metal category:

Devo - Oh, No! It's Devo. These guys are the true and original alternative band. So quirky and odd yet so freaking cool. This is the first album I heard from this band. Actually, a friend was real big into this band and we had a "club" where the only music we allowed ourselves to listen to was Devo. That's Good, Out of Synch, Big Mess, etc. What a freaking bad-ass album. I have no shame in admitting that I still listen to Devo on occasion. A not-so-guilty pleasure I suppose.

Next!

Assignment LFM

OK, so we all have an album in our collection that just doesn't fit. We are all metalhead but we listen to all kinds of music, I assume (maybe not, who knows). So, among all the Death CD's, the Megadeth CD's, and the Mayhem memorabilia there has to be a handful of CD's that stick out like a sore thumb. Maybe it is something you bought on a whim, listened to once and put aside to collect dust bunnies, or it was a gift that you just never got rid of, or something. So, your assignment, LFM members, should you choose to accept it, is to find that CD or CD's and tell the world all about it.

1. How did you come by acquiring this CD?

2. Is it something you used to listen to often, or still do?

3.
