KANSAS CITY POWER METAL FEST lineup/format change for Friday, August 8th

Greetings KCPMF Devotees -

Well, as they say, change is inevitable. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are dissolving the "fest" format for Friday, August 8th. We regret to inform you that VICIOUS RUMORS and PHANTOM-X will no longer be playing that night. Putting together a festival like this is definitely not an easy task, and we (the promoters) are finding out just how rough it can actually be. We sincerely apologize for the lineup changes...yet again!

However, as somebody else once said, the show must go on. There will still be a kick-ass metal show in Kansas City on August 8th! Think of it as a KCPMF kick-off party, if you will. Or perhaps just a really damn awesome show!

Metal lords LEATHERWOLF will still be gracing The Riot Room's stage for an oldschool-bangin' set, as will the heavy-as-hell SEVENTH CALLING. Joining these fine young lads onstage will be Las Vegas' own AVENGER OF BLOOD, an incredible band helping to bring thrash back to the masses!

This is a lineup not to be missed! Also included are locals THE ARRET ZONE and MEATSHANK, plus a completely separate outdoor lineup consisting of KC's finest metallers!

BLACK ELK tour dates; new album coming in October

Always A Six, Never A Nine is the second album and the follow up to the 2006 self-titled debut from Portland, OR aggro wreckers Black Elk, whose psychotic brand of crushing, noise-rock influenced heaviosity is a return to the unhinged underground rock force of bands like Jesus Lizard, Melvins, Black Flag and Hammerhead. This new album features ten songs of seething weirdness, with the dissonant, crushing riffage, lunging rhythmic push and awesome freaked out, Yow-esque vocals of singer Tom Glose that made their debut a fave among anyone who remembered the days when Amphetamine Reptile ruled the underground rock scene, but with some interesting new elements (bleak guitar ambience, piano, etc.) that add new shadows to Black Elk's ferocious sound.

Always A Six, Never A Nine will be coming out through Crucial Blast on October 21st and will be available as both a CD in deluxe gatefold packaging and digital download, with touring to coincide with the release.

Black Elk will stampede down the West Coast beginning this week, bringing their Pacific Northwest style of wickedly mangled headfuck-rock to some lucky towns:

Athens, Ohio’s SKELETONWITCH are proud to be announced as part of this year’s Blackest of the Black Tour alongside Danzig, Dimmu Borgir, Moonspell and Winds of Plague. SKELETONWITCH guitarist Scott Hedrick comments: "Cheers and beers, heshers!!! Here's a quick SKELETONWITCH update; proof that we've been doing SOMETHING since returning from Europe (besides gorging on Taco Bell). As you may have read, we're privileged to be a part of this year's Blackest of the Black Tour. We are beyond stoked to be a part of this killer lineup. About six years ago, I can recall [SKELETONWITCH guitarist] Nate one Halloween half shit-canned, with half a 30-pack, and a Marshall half-stack, standing on his roof playing Danzig riffs. SKELETONWITCH continues to support the band’s Prosthetic Records debut, ‘Beyond The Permafrost,’ which saw an October 2007 release and features artwork from Baroness’ John Baizley and production courtesy of Corey Smoot (Municipal Waste, GWAR). The record is the follow-up to the band’s self-released EP, ‘Worship The Witch.’ Recently returning from a European tour alongside Hate Eternal, Cephalic Carnage, and Deaborn in May and June, having already toured Stateside this year with the likes of Hate Eternal, Soilent Green, Arsis, A Life Once Lost, Job For A Cowboy, The Red Chord, and more, in addition to a busy 2007 on the road.

SOURVEIN sign to Candlelight Records; tour & new releases announced

Candlelight Records today confirms the signing of North Carolina-based sludge/doom metal band Sourvein. The popular five-piece on tour now through August 11 have recorded a special/limited edition EP titled Imperial Bastard which will see domestic release on September 30. It will be followed by the band's Billy Anderson-produced full-length label debut currently planned for release in early 2009.

Formed in 1993, Sourvein relocated to Cape Fear, North Carolina after Hurricane Katrina ravaged their long-time home base. Blacktide Music says, "ominous riffs, which launch into despair-ridden breakdowns the likes of which would make Eyehategod tremble with fear." Currently featuring vocalist T-Roy Medlin, former Buzzov-en drummer Ramzi, bassist Bonne Doom with guitarists Cool Clyde and Sleepy Doom, the band have released two full length albums - their self-titled (often referred to as Salvation) debut released in 2000/Game Two Records and Will to Mangle released in 2002/Southern Lord. Numerous EPs and split recordings have kept the band in the eyes of their growing fanbase as well their commitment to consistent touring both in the US and overseas.

Massachusetts heavy hitters THE ACACIA STRAIN have posted a brand new song, “Skynet,” on the band’s official MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/theacaciastrain) to celebrate the launch of pre-orders for the band’s forthcoming album, ‘Continent,’ now available online in five different, exclusive packages here (http://www.prostheticrecords.com/TASsplash.html). The first 400 pre-orders will come with an autographed 11”x17” poster featuring album artwork by Paul Romano (Mastodon, The Red Chord, Trivium). “Skynet” is the lead track from ‘Continent’ and is slated to be shot for a music video shortly; more details on that will be available soon. “‘Skynet’ is a band favorite,” vocalist Vincent Bennett says of the band’s new track. “We figured we should debut some of our ‘different’ tracks so when people pick up the album they are totally confused.”

Ironclad Recordings artist Apiary changes name to EARLY GRAVES – new album out August 19th

Northern California’s Apiary have changed their name to EARLY GRAVES and will be releasing a brand new album titled We: The Guillotine via Ironclad Recordings on August 19th, 2008. Make sure to head over to the band’s new MySpace page to check out two new tracks off the band’s upcoming release and tour dates currently scheduled.

Here’s what guitarist and founding member Chris Brock had to say about the name change:

"We changed the name from Apiary to Early Graves for a pretty simple reason. The songs we had created on the road under the former name had nothing to do with the original Apiary and we needed a new name that was a better fit, and more relevant to who we are. We wanted a name that meant burning your wick at both ends. It also didn’t hurt that there was not original members left and we didn’t want to be that band."

Chris’ comments on the upcoming CD We: The Guillotine:

"Our new record is called We: The Guillotine and is nothing like the former banner and their album. It was recorded in Nashville with Steve Austin (Converge/Lamb of God/Deadguy) and is dirty and punk and is metal and is a testament to who we are as people. It’s fast like the Millennium Falcon, aggressive like a pack of hyenas, and hopes to never be compared to this stupid fucking fake death and thrash movement going on right. It has guest appearances on vocals and guitar by Steve Austin on Last Name: Porter and Here There Be Monsters and another vocal appearance by Eugene Robinson of Oxbow on Here There Be Monsters and their parts are haunting. Metal Blade Records is very pleased to announce the signing of Vancouver Canada’s BISON, a band just as heavy as the beast they are named after. From the first note of opening night in L.A. to the final bow of the tour, rock was in good hands at Prog Nation and will live in the great minds of music lovers and concert goers for a lifetime. Thanx to you the fans for your overwhelming enthusiasm and your into-it-ness; you are half the equation. Thanx to all four bands for being so damn cool (again, great bill Mike)! The music of these bands speaks for itself and behind the scenes we all got along famously. Its great when you actually like the people your on tour with; what a stand up bunch, bands and crew members alike- you all made it happen! Thank you Mike Portnoy and all of Dream Theater. You guys are a class act and consummate pro's as well world class musicians. I'll try not to bite too much of your stuff but I can already feel the bars of 5, 7, and 9 creeping into my mind! This tour was definitely full of good times and music, from uncle Mike visiting us in our dressing room before showtime just to listen to Joey Eppard's unique vocal warmup to the very last night of tour when I sat down at my kit for the final performance only to find a full bottle of baby powder dumped on my snare drum; probably the most explosive intro of my career…when the dust settled and I could see the snare drum head again I could see the words…"thanx for a great tour, Mike Portnoy"….no thank you and I hope Prog Nation 09' is as big a success!! We're back at home spending time with our families and making more music than ever! Just this Sunday we all performed in at The Basement in Kingston, NY in the form of Dent [Joe Stote on guitar and vox and Gartdrumm with Max contributing vox and dance moves for a few songs] and The Eppard Brothers [Joey Eppard, Josh Eppard, Billy Riker with Daniel Grimsland playing bass on a few songs, Dave Daw of Darkworld Studio filling in on bass for the rest of the set plus -- 3's original bassist, Chris John Bittner, joined in for a few classics and Jimmy Eppard graced the stage for the full Eppard Brothers set!!!]. Thanks to Uncle John the Baker for making this show happen, inviting us to play, and still performing a high energy set with Instant Asshole, even after a brutal skateboarding accident (best wishes Uncle John!). We can't wait to do it again!

MASSACHUSETTS METAL GIANTS UNEARTH COMMENCE WORK ON NEW ALBUM

Influential metal quintet UNEARTH has begun work on its new album. The follow up to the band’s acclaimed 2006 release III: In the Eyes of Fire is scheduled to drop this October via Metal Blade Records.

UNEARTH is currently recording at MA’s System Recording Studios with producer Adam Dutkiewicz, while the album’s drum tracks are being laid to tape by drummer Derek Kerswill (Kingdom of Sorrow, Seemless) at Zing Studios. The as-yet-untitled record is said to feature the band’s “most dynamic material to date,” combining strong tension and release, abundant guitar solos and a bulldozing power-groove.

“HEAVY METAL SHRED MAYHEM! NOW WITH 50% MORE GUITAR SOLOS!! If the new Unearth songs were laundry detergent, then this is what it would say on the box,” dishes UNEARTH lead guitarist Buz McGrath. “Fortunately for all you metal maniacs, it's not laundry soap but a mind-blowing journey consisting of epic mosh and shred, so we had to call in the one man who could wrangle such a massive beast - Adam Dutkiewicz. We are very excited to be working with him again and between 40 oz. chugging and doing burn-outs in Ken's '82 Corvette, we are recording what will definitely be the best album of our career.”

UNEARTH formed in 1998 and in the decade since, has become one of the U.S.’ most proven metal bands, shifting over 400,000 units over the course of its career. The group’s tireless touring schedule has seen it perform alongside some of the genre’s most revered names (including tours with Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne as part of Ozzfest [2004 and 2006] and a 2007 U.S. tour as hand-picked direct support for thrash titans Slayer), and also headline venues the world over, consistently helping give rise to some of extreme music’s fresh blood in the process. Just in time for the big Summer Slaughter tour, it is our pleasure to present our seventh music video, “Everything Went Black”! After the last two videos were comprised of live/goofing around footage, we wanted to do something different this time around. The Creepshow theme was an idea of Brian’s, and I think it was the perfect way to represent what we’re all about… classic horror elements, and ridiculous amounts of fun. The video was directed by Dave Brodsky, who was selected for his prior involvement with The Red Chord, and we are very stoked with the outcome. He did a really great job with recreating the campy comic book vibe of the old Creepshow series. For any of you new jacks that aren’t familiar with Creepshow, you better get your asses in gear and check it out! I must commend Dave for tolerating my most horrible acting skills (“Dude, you smiled in EVERY part!”) and John K for being the best actor this horror business has ever seen. Stay morbid and we’ll see you soon!

GOJIRA frontman talks about new album, the state of Earth, pronouncing the name

France’s metal titans GOJIRA are currently finishing the band’s forthcoming album, ‘The Way of All Flesh,’ which is currently slated for an October 14 release in North America through Prosthetic Records. The follow-up to the critically-acclaimed ‘From Mars To Sirius,’ the album will be available throughout Europe one day earlier through Listenable Records.

GOJIRA frontman Joe Duplantier recently spoke with MTV’s Chris Harris about the upcoming record. An excerpt from the conversation: "That's the theme — it's about death itself," explained. "It's also about the immortality of the soul. That's the main subject for us. Since we started to play and release albums, we've always talked about the same thing: the soul.

“This album's got a more dramatic feel to it, and some of the lyrics are almost cynical," continued Duplantier. "Usually, with my lyrics, I'm always positive. But on this album, I'm so pissed off with the situation on Earth right now, how we're abusing so much, and we take everything that we can take from the ocean, and we kill off endangered species. So in some of the songs, it's almost like a requiem for the Earth. This record is a lot darker — like, a lot darker, I would say. The music is darker and more violent." SUSPYRE sign to Sensory Records - band auditions going on now

Sensory Records is proud to announce the signing of New Jersey's up-and-coming prog metal all-stars Suspyre. Formed in 2001, these talented, young musicians have discovered an energetic and gifted way of combining progressive rock and symphonic metal with classical and jazz fusion. The bands' new album When Time Fades... will be released September 30, 2008.

"We are all very excited about signing to Sensory Records" says Gregg Rossetti, guitarist and founder/composer of Suspyre. "The high-caliber musicians on this label have inspired our band to become what it is and we are now proud to be a part of their family."

October 2005 marked the release of the band's first full-length album, The Silvery Image. Response to the album was so positive that the band was signed to Nightmare Records and followed up with the release of their next album, A Great Divide, in March 2007. The album hit the top 2007 prog metal album charts on websites such as USA Progressive Music, ProgPalaceRadio.com, and Beyond Ear Candy.

To further their goal to develop and perfect their fusion of varied musical inspirations and influences, Suspyre has recorded a third album, When Time Fades... This album is a groovier piece of art with a bit more metallic crunch, and even more variety in the song styles, including an acoustic piece. No one can accuse this band of being formulaic in their composing. When Time Fades... has set the bar even higher than the band's previous albums, not only in music creation but also in the artwork done by Gustavo Sazes (Firewind, Dark Empire, Mystic Prophecy) , and featured guest artists that include drummer Charlie Zeleny (Behold the Arctopus, Blotted Science, Jordan Rudess), and female vocalist Trisha O'Keefe (Amaran's Plight).

Suspyre is also currently trying out musicians for two new positions, seeking a drummer and a keyboardist to fill the line-up of their band for live performances (see below for full audition info).

INFORMATION ABOUT AUDITIONS

Applicants MUST possess the following:
1. A demonstrated ability to play with impeccable timing and accuracy. Knowledge of music theory is a plus.
3. Confidence in themselves but also a willingness to be a team player.
4. Proficiency in playing songs with odd time signatures.
5. Residency in the United States (NJ/PA/NY residency is preferred).
6. At least 18 years old.
7. A familiarity with the SUSPYRE catalog.
8. A flexible work schedule, since should you land the gig you will be asked to do extensive touring with the band and weekend recording sessions.

Drummer must be able to play double bass pedal at the speed of 170 to 180.

EVERGREY sign with SPV

Following intense and very constructive discussions, Steamhammer/SPV have announced their future collaboration with Swedish dark melodic metal act, Evergrey. The deal includes not only the group's brand-new studio album, Torn, which will arrive in September, but also Evergrey's complete back-catalog. SPV Head of Labels, Ulrike Rudolph says: "We are all happy to welcome Evergrey to the SPV/Steamhammer Family, and are looking forward to a great future together." Evergrey mastermind Tom S. Englund is also looking forward to a productive cooperation with Steamhammer, explaining: "After long and intense negotiations, we feel that we have arrived at optimum conditions for everybody involved. We are confident that Evergrey will continue to grow artistically under the terms of this contract, that SPV will enjoy our cooperation and - this is definitely the most important aspect - that our fans will thoroughly benefit from the new deal."

The first stage of this ambitious target will see the release of Evergrey's new studio album, Torn, at the beginning of September, featuring eleven compositions, described by Englund as a "modern mix of In Search Of Truth and Recreation Day". "The tracks are all guitar-oriented and very atmospheric. They have exactly the sound that our fans expect from us." According to Englund, the slightly more experimental direction of Evergrey's previous release, Monday Morning Apocalypse, has given way again to old strengths and virtues. "Two years ago we needed an album with a slightly different approach and an expensive producer, just to find out how that sort of thing works. It was the right album at the time, but now we have returned to our typical trademarks." This is one of the reasons why the tracks on Torn were self-produced by Englund together with drummer Jonas Ekdahl. In addition, the band has a new bassist, Fredrik Larsson having been replaced by former Stratovarius musician Jari Kainulainen.

Since the band arrived on the scene in 1998, Evergrey have brought out six studio albums and one live cut. All of them made the top 20 in their native Sweden and the last two made the top 10 (no. 6 and 3, respectively). On top of that, their DVD was number 1 for four weeks and nominated for a Grammy in Sweden. The band has toured around the globe several times, together with In Flames, Nevermore, Throwdown, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom and Iced Earth, among others. Along with Torn, their new contract with Steamhammer/SPV includes the band's complete back-catalog, so top-quality reissues featuring a selection of bonus tracks are likely in future. "There is so much additional material for each album that we could theoretically re-release it on an extra DVD. Whatever we manage to do – premium reissues are certainly a possibility."

BLACK MARKET ACTIVITIES ANNOUNCES THE SIGNING OF SWEET COBRA

Black Market Activities proudly announces the addition of Sweet Cobra to the family. The band’s Hawthorne Street Records release, “Forever,” will be reissued through Black Market Activities on June 24.

Sweet Cobra will play day two of “Dudefest” in Indianapolis on June 21 at Zanies Too.

An admiration for ‘70s inspired groove rock and remnants of a hardcore driven past brewed the foundation for Sweet Cobra. The mind-boggling grooves and sludgy, down-trodden guitar riffs make avoiding toe-tapping nearly inescapable. Driven by murky grooves, Sweet Cobra incorporates the disgruntled fervor of hardcore as the finishing touch.

Sweet Cobra formed in 2002 with drummer Jason Gagovski (Suicide Note) and vocalist/bassist Botchy Vasquez (The Killer, Challenger). Guitarists Robert Lanham and Matt Arluck later joined on to complete the line up. The band made its debut on Seventh Rule Recordings with “Praise,” introducing Sweet Cobra’s boundary defying sound. Picking up where “Praise” left off is 2007’s “Forever,” originally released through Hawthorne Street Records. “Forever” offers eight songs, encompassing a similar reefer madness, with production by Greg Norman (Pelican, Russian Circles) and mixed by Sanford Parker (Minsk, Buried at Sea) at Volume Studios.

LIZZY BORDEN is “Abnormal”, new video available for viewing

Abnormal was shot last year at the New England metal festival and features clips from that show. commented Lizzy, “in the past the show has taken on many different looks to capture the vision of each record, this is a quick four minute snap shot of what the show Looks like in 2008”

Abnormal is the second video from the band's latest album, Appointment with Death, which was released in the U.S. on October 30th via Metal Blade Records. The song Abnormal features Corey Beaulieu from Trivium as a special guest guitarist in the studio. The video performance features Lizzy, Joey Scott, Marten Andersson and Ira Black.

Appointment with Death was produced by Lizzy and Joey Scott. It was recorded at the Zanzibar studios in N. Hollywood CA and was mixed by Erik Rutan (HATE ETERNAL, ex-MORBID ANGEL) at Mana studio in Florida.

The Ocean tour diary up on MetalKult.com

Germany’s, The Ocean, are currently out on their first ever North American tour and have been having a blast playing to American and Canadian crowds. The Ocean main man, Robin Staps, has been chronicling their experiences for MetalKult.com.

Here’s an excerpt from Robin’s first update from the road:
“As a European in America, you sometimes feel alienated. I have been here many times before and have actually lived in the States for a year, and still I don't get used to certain aspects of life here. No drinking in the streets! That's ridiculous... walking out of the venue with a beer in my hands, I had bouncers chase me every night since I got here, I just keep forgetting it cause it's so unreal for me. If anyone tried to make that a law in Germany there would be riots in the streets! In a city like Berlin you will see flocks of people just sitting out on the streets at night drinking and talking and partying until the early morning hours. In Madrid they call it botellones, meeting up with your friends in a park with a stereo or a guitar and a few bottles of red wine. It's a part of culture; it's unimaginable to do without. And despite all this, I don't get the impression that there are fewer alcoholics in America than in Spain or Germany.”

EPICUREAN enlists former Cellador guitarist Bill Hudson for upcoming Metal Blade Records ‘Fresh Meat Tour’

Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Epicurean has recruited former Cellador guitarist Bill Hudson to join them on the road for the upcoming Metal Blade Records Fresh Meat Tour. Epicurean will be hitting the road in support of their Metal Blade Records debut A Consequence of Design, which was released on March 4th 2008. The Fresh Meat Tour, presented by MetalSucks.net, featuring The Absence, The Destro, Epicurean, and Rose Funeral will kick off on June 19th in Richland, New Jersey.

AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE to release first single off debut album Total Brutal

On Friday June 6th Austrian Death Machine will release the first single off their eagerly awaited debut Total Brutal. The track, If it Bleeds, We Can Kill It, features the voice of Ahhnold as Dutch from the movie Predator screaming back and forth with the Predator himself! “In the first verse Ahhnold is talking trash about how he's going to take Predator down, but in the second verse Predator comes back spittin' his evil game. This is the classic struggle of good and evil but with way bigger muscles and more brutal double bass. In fact, I think it's the breakdown about 1/2 way through the song that crushes Predator's evil once and for all” comments band member Tim Lambesis.

One could not pick a better track for the first single off Total Brutal. Mainly because Predator is one of the best movies ever made in the history of man and received a countless amount of awards at the 1987 Oscars (Best Actor Ever, Best Chest Explosion, Best Use of Chameleon-like Camouflage to Kill as Many People as You Can, Cast Most Likely To Go On To Be Governors, etc). Or at least we think it did. And if it didn’t then it should have seeing as Ahhnold once again saved the world, this time from aliens who wanted nothing more than to peel the skin off our bodies and make trophies out of our skulls.

Here’s what front-man Ahhnold had to say about the band’s first single:

“Most bands put all of their good songs first. Instead I decided to release track 15 first to prove that this album is Total Brutal from start to finish. If you like this song, then get ready for 17 tracks of punishing brutality when the CD finally hits.... or when I hit you in the face for not buying it. Whichever happens first, at least we know things only get better from here.”
