They got rid of Lord Worm.. again. I've never been a fan of Lord Worm, but the new vocalist is like the epitome of generic for the current metal scene. They went from super crazy technical to mediocre deathcore with their new stuff. There are even some clean singing parts... Yeah, on a Cryptopsy album. Pretty sure this one is gonna spark up some serious backlash.

Knights of the Abyss Signs To Ferret Music

I am not sure if many have you have heard of the band but i advise that you should definitely check it out. Why?! Becouse we still think it is a great fucking album but it got slammed and misunderstood becouse of the vocal style and the drumsound and so on.
I've got mixed feelings about this. While Catch 22 isn't my favorite Hypocrisy album, it's far from terrible and it adds another dimension to their discography. It's definitely different than their other stuff. It was the only album they did with anywhere near that much clean vocals, and I think that basically says enough. They got the hint that most fans want heavier albums. Virus (which came after Catch 22) is one of their best and most devastating, so it's not like Catch 22 was a career killer. I don't think that they need to go so far as to re-release it just because it was "slammed and misunderstood."
Personally, I'd rather they took the time to re-record their first couple of albums with better production.
Then again, I will have to hear what changes are made before I fully make up my mind.

Revisting "Icons of Evil"

So I started listening to Vital Remains' Icons of Evil lately. I heard about the accident several days ago but didn't expect this. From Blabbermouth this morning:

Drummer Witold "Vitek" Kieltyka of the Polish extreme metal band DECAPITATED passed away in a Russian hospital from injuries sustained in a recent road collision. He was 23 years old.

Vitek and DECAPITATED singer Covan (real name: Adrian Kowanek) were hurt in an accident earlier in the week involving DECAPITATED's tour bus and a truck carrying wood in Gomel, on the Russia/Belarus border. Both musicians reportedly sustained serious head injuries in the collision, which is believed to have been the fault of the band's driver (although this has not yet been officially confirmed).

According to the Polish Internet portal Onet.pl, Vitek underwent trepanation, a form of surgery in which a hole is drilled or scraped into the skull, and was due to be transported to a hospital in Krakow, Poland for further treatment.

Covan's family released a statement yesterday (Thursday, November 1) that the vocalist's condition had improved. At the time, the vocalist was still said to be at a hospital in Novozybkov, Russia, where he and Vitek were taken following the accident.

Check out photos of DECAPITATED taken on their tour of Russia (courtesy of Darkside):

Moscow (October 27, 2007)
St. Petersburg (October 21, 2007)
Deicide-best release?

I have only heard Scars of the crucifix by Deicide.

What other cd's have they released that are worthy of reccomendation as i would like to expand my Deicide collection.

Obituary

I just picked this up today. Being a DM band from Quebec these days is on par with being black and from Africa. Also, Immolation and Nile have new releases available this year (go to Vengeful’s website and they’re gushing in anticipation over Ithyphallic as much as they are Karma!) and former members of Gorguts have returned and are blowing minds with Negativa; really, do we need yet another fucking band rehashing the same riffs, triggering their kick drums and ultimately adding nothing to the game?! Hell no! But thankfully Vengeful has taken a few steps and at least attempted to distinguish themselves from most of their contemporaries at home and abroad. They didn’t do this by adding anything from way out of left field to their decidedly brutal sound, but at the same time, Karma doesn’t come across like a rote regurgitation of death metal standards. Included in the mix is a filthy grindcore element along the lines of Nasum, Pig Destroyer’s groove, Brutal Truth influenced guitar work and the occasional off-kilter rhythm à la Leng Tch’e. The 10-minute epic, “Counterfeit Deity”, kicks off sounding like Possesed before slowly stripping layers and concluding as an aching, throbbing near-doom/sludge scrapheap. Black metal riffs and vocal screeching abound in “Burial (Parts 1 and 2),” “Sentenced” is a kick-ass tune that sounds like pre-Kevin Sharp Brutal Truth and the album’s outro recalls a tribal-ish, Sepultura workout. The production quality swings and sways between low-end, muddy sludge and tin-sheet thin black metal with drummer Jean-Sébastien Gagnon’s slippery style combining Pete Sandoval’s rapid-fire attack and D-beat pounding and chameleon-like vocalist Marc-André Grenier going from vomiting grizzly bear to a buzzsaw banshee and back quite regularly. Brass Tacks: There’s enough injected into Karma to keep the listener on their toes and discover new elements with each listen and aren’t those the sorts of records that are always the ones with the most staying power? – Kevin Stewart-Panko

in concert:

OCTOBER 13th 2007

8PM (Free Vengeful – “Tragedy Lies Ahead” Mcd for first 100 attendees)

VENGEFUL
www.myspace.com/vengeful1
SORDID
www.myspace.com/sordidofficial
DIFAMATION
www.myspace.com/difamation

10$

CLUB LAMBI 4465 BOUL. I found a used copy of Spheres in a local store several months ago and I dug it quite a bit. A while later, I came across the Roadrunner 2-for-1 set of Consuming Impulse and Testimony of the Ancients, so I picked that up too. That's where my obsession started.

While Spheres is more spacey and experimental (think of a mixture between Cynic and later-era Death), CI & TotA are more straight-up, classic death metal. TotA is my favorite thus far, and Terrorizer described it as having a cinematic feel to it, which I agree with. It's like a death metal zombie movie score. I love it. Reading about them just now, I discovered that Tony Choy played bass on TotA, which is crazy...I just saw him with Atheist last week. He was also in Cynic.

Aside from a couple of demos, Malleus Maleficarum was their first official album, which I haven't heard yet. I'm guessing I'll dig it. There was also a "best of" release from '94 and a live album released in '06. I'm missing those too.

So...anyone else into these guys? They're definitely worth checking out if you're into Death, Atheist and Cynic.

Death (the band) appreciation thread

For a long time the only metal bands I listened to utilized too much hairspray. I stil listen to those bands once in a while, but I soon venutered into the Metallica/Megadeth/ Suicidal Tendencies area, and I never strayed too far from those 3, except maybe Ozzy/Black Sabbath. Then, after a few years and countless hours listening to Rust in Peace I found my way to power and prog metal, namely Dream Theater. Then I happened to meet a guy at work who was very much addicted to much heavier and aggressive music, which he introduced me to. Bands like Slayer, Overkill and Testament, and then Arch Enemy and a few others. But now I am listening to The Sound of Perserverance by Death and I am floored. I had heard it before but never really paid too much attention. I am sorry it took me so long to figure it out. All hail Chick Schuldiner. The man gave the world some fantastic music. Sad that he is gone, now. This stuff is incredible.

Anyone else want to jump in while I pick my jaw up off the floor and wipe the drool from my face?

Skinless

Is an amazing album.
