I've wondered about the origins of the meaningless "like" before. I'm going to put the blame on Scooby Doo.

I actually kinda doubt that's where it began, but Shaggy does say "like" meaninglessly a lot. "Like, Zoinks!" That cartoon started in '69, which was at least pre-Valley Girl.
