| Am I missing something? I listened to Parellels and Disconnected and was completely bored.

Try A Pleasant Shade of Grey. It is very moody. Actually, much of Fates is moody. Ray Alder is one of my favorite vocalists of all time, though.
I can see where you are coming from, but I still dig 'em.

I love the band. Older albums are some of the best power metal out there. Very late 80's- mid 90's are essential for prog fans.
- What you used to love now, you're gonna adore. With Charmin Ultra, less is more. Cha Cha Cha, Charmin.

The First 3 ALbums were BEST with John Arch on vocals. RAY ALDER is ok.. but the band hasnt been the same since they lost John.

| Well, No Exit wasn't really such a stray for their power metal sound, although I don't like it as much as their previous albums, since it did lack direction. But it was the natural progression from Awaken The Guardian. I don't think that the band really changed because of Alder. It seemed to be when Mark Zonder joined. Perfect Symmetry, Parallels and Inside Out are prog albums, and very different from their first 4, so that would obviously cause some mixed emotions. Personally, I find Awaken The Guardian to be their best album. Very focussed, excellent songwriting, really complex with a lot of odd-timing, yet manages to stick to that power/speed metal sound. Also a very soulful delivery on all fronts. The guitar leads might not have been as technical as a lot of newer power metal bands, but I dare any of them to try and write/play the intro from The Guardian, with half as much emotion of the original.

| I pretty much agree with everything Metalhead87 said, although I don't think the band changed because of either Zonder or Alder. It just so happened, I believe, that Matheos' writing style changed which coincided with them joing the band. Maybe the writing changed to suit their abilities better, maybe not. I dunno And Awaken the Guardian is an excellent album.

| I don't think it was a coincidence that they changed so much when Zonder joined. Alder was part of the natural progression. From The Spectre Within to Awaken The Guardian, No Exit was just the next step of a similar sound. They were trying to progress a little more with their power/speed metal sound, which was why John Arch decided to leave the band (he was offered the job to do vocals for Watchtower, but he declined). His entrance was more about the timing, but I do believe that he did help them progress into a more progressive band, just that he wasn't a key part of the change. Zonder definitely played a huge role in FW becoming a pure prog band. Whether it was h | | | |
